Reflection Essay

When I started this course, I must admit, I was a little scared. I had just finished my composition one course and thought I was unprepared for the new, harder course that awaited me. Thankfully, I was placed with Professor Hammett, who has done an excellent job of teaching and explaining the purpose of this course. The essays I wrote under Professor Hammett's advice have taught me how to analyze texts and form thoughts and opinions on those texts. The topic of my essays was illiteracy in America, and I have learned so much about that topic and how to write about it.

Coming into this course, I did not know APA style writing, but I quickly learned the rules that come with it. It is very different from the MLA format that I was used to. For example, the APA has a different type of title page than the MLA. This was an adjustment, but learning this has helped me become a better writer. Another skill I learned was how to create a reference page correctly. This has helped me not just in my college writing, but my FFA competitions, furthering my ability to become a better writer.

The two projects we accomplished this semester have made my writing more focused and concentrated. During the first project, I learned how to find reliable factual sources to back up my claims and write those facts into an essay so that it would sound interesting. The second project taught me more about reading informational texts or novels and forming concise thoughts about those writings. Reading many diverse reports has taught me how to comprehend the texts and draw out meaningful information. I have also learned how to arrange an understandable and organized essay by writing rhetorical and argumentative essays.

Overall, this course has taught me a lot about writing and clear, concise essays. The knowledge I have gained from this class will help me in my future college classes and career. Hopefully, my writings will continue to improve with the help of my workshopping partners, teachers, and tutors. Also, my writing will get better with practice and determination to become a better writer.
